Pope Francis, the former Jorge Cardinal Bergoglio, has announced he will do something quite unorthodox during Holy Week. The new pontiff already shocked many followers when he paid his own hotel bill following the conclave and made important telephone calls personally instead of having an aide make calls, as is custom.

Maundy Thursday, or the eve of Good Friday, is an important day in the Catholic faith. Catholics commemorate Jesus' Last Supper on this day and is celebrated in anticipation of Christ's Passion.

Pope Francis will, instead of holding Mass in St. Peter's Basilica or even at his patron church in Rome (the pope doubles as the city's archbishop), be holding Mass at a nearby prison according to The Telegraph.

The Casal del Marmo Jail in Rome will host Pope Francis next Thursday, where he will kiss the feet of 12 inmates during the service to signify Jesus' offering to his disciples at the Last Supper. The paper also reports both the current pontiff and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI will share a luncheon over the weekend prior to Holy Week.

Pope Francis has previously been known for such humble acts as washing the feet of AIDS-afflicted Africans as well as riding mass transit every day as Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
