A college student who recently learned that she was pregnant with her boyfriend’s child allegedly ended her life after he refused to marry her, citing caste differences.

The deceased girl, identified only as Aarti, was a third-year diploma student in the Thiruvarur district of India’s Tamil Nadu.

According to local media reports, Aarti hid her pregnancy from her family and even avoided attending classes, citing poor health conditions.

She had allegedly asked her boyfriend, Savith Kumar, to marry her but he refused to do so, stating that his family would not agree to the alliance as they both belong to different castes.

On Tuesday April 5, Aarti was rushed to the Thiruvarur Government Medical College hospital after she started vomiting blood.

During her treatment, doctors learned that the girl was pregnant and had consumed rat poison to end her life. She was pronounced dead a short while later.

The deceased girl’s family has demanded strict action against Savith, accusing him of abetting her suicide.

A further probe is underway. No arrests have been reported at the time of this writing.

A similar incident was reported in the Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, India, where a 23-year-old woman allegedly killed herself by jumping into a river from a running train after her fiancé postponed their wedding citing financial problems.

The woman, identified as S Durga Devi, a resident of Jothi Lingam Street, reportedly ended her life by jumping into the Kosasthalaiyar river as the train was crossing the Enore Creek bridge on Monday, April 4.

Passengers, who witnessed the alleged suicide, told police that the woman was on a phone call, arguing with someone and sobbing before she jumped out of the speeding train.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) was immediately informed and they rushed to the spot. Her body washed ashore later that evening, according to reports.

The woman was identified after police recovered her handbag which she had left on the train before taking the deadly leap, local media outlets reported.

Police said they are investigating the woman’s call records to identify the man she was talking to. However, the investigation could be time-consuming as she allegedly jumped into the deep waters with the cellphone in her hand.

The body of the woman was sent to Stanley Government Hospital for an autopsy. A further probe is underway, police said.
