Everybody knows that Prince Charles had a tumultuous marriage to Princess Diana, but not everybody knows the extent to which the Prince of Wales abhorred his wife. Prince Charles disliked Princess Diana so much that he even came up with a plan to make sure that she would never be crowned queen.

Princess Diana found out about Prince Charles’ affair with Camilla too soon. That is why although millions of people around the world celebrated their lavish wedding at the St. Paul Cathedral in 1981, their fairytale marriage did not last long. Riddled with scandals and reports of infidelity, their marriage was something too much for Princess Diana to handle. However, divorcing Prince Charles was the last thing she ever wanted to do.

According to royal correspondent James Whitaker, Princess Diana left Prince Charles in 1992, but it was not until 1996 that their divorce was finalized because the Princess of Wales did not want a divorce. Prince Charles was reportedly shattered by the fact that Princess Diana insisted that she did not want a divorce, so he decided to take steps to ensure that his estranged wife would never become queen.

“Charles said, ‘I will never sit on the throne with that woman at my side!’” Whitaker shared. “He has told his most senior aides and legal advisers to draw up plans aimed at sidelining Diana before any coronation.”

Prince Charles was in Germany when he learned that Princess Diana was going to have an explosive tell-all interview on BBC a week later. In the said interview, Princess Diana was to talk about her marriage to Prince Charles and how everything fell apart because of her illicit affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

As soon as Prince Charles learned about the upcoming interview, he immediately met up with his then mistress to talk about the possible implications of Princess Diana’s revelations. It dawned on him that the interview might work to his advantage as it might serve as a catalyst for the divorce proceedings, and it did.

Whitaker revealed that it was Prince Charles’ desire for Princess Diana to say yes to the divorce because that’s the easiest way to prevent Princess Diana from becoming queen. It took Princess Diana two months to respond to Queen Elizabeth’s letter to her and Princess Charles, where she tried to convince both parties to agree to a divorce to make their separation official, and the Prince of Wales couldn’t be happier.
