Princess Diana’s marriage with Prince Charles was a very torrid affair, especially after all their issues and backbiting was shoved into the limelight. Diana was very candid about her issues, and her approaching the media had earned the sympathy of the masses.

What people had come to understand was that Diana was placed in a very difficult and precarious situation after entering the royal family, causing a great deal of distress on herself. However, the resulting onslaught was something that can’t be blamed solely on Charles.

Diana had become exceedingly difficult, even causing an alarming amount of scandal to be placed on the royal family. One particular instance found Diana in a very shocking situation, deliberately placing the unborn Prince William into harm’s path.

In “The Royal Family: Scandals At The Palace,” Paul Burrell, Diana’s butler, shared that in 1981, when Diana was expecting Prince William, he heard “an enormous clatter on the wooden staircase.” He rushed to the noise and found the princess “faking a tumble” halfway down the stairs. “There's no way on this planet that she would put at harm her unborn baby but she wanted attention,” he said.

In several recordings sent to royal biographer Andrew Morton, Diana confessed that Charles wouldn’t pay attention to her, and it made her desperate. “When I was four months pregnant with William I threw myself downstairs, trying to get my husband’s attention, for him to listen to me,” she admitted. “I had told Charles I felt so desperate and I was crying my eyes out.”

“He said I was crying wolf,” she narrated. “So I threw myself down the stairs. The Queen comes out, absolutely horrified, shaking — she was so frightened.” But the princess added that though her stomach was bruised, she knew the baby was unharmed.

Diana had been under a lot of stress at that time and even confessed to several other self-harming behavior: from wrist-cut attempts to breaking glasses and even throwing things out of the window. Despite the magnitude of her lashing out, Charles still didn’t show any care, not taking the princess seriously at her attempts for attention. She was said to have been given professional help, but it reportedly didn’t help her situation.
