Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene proposed this week that resources be allocated for the development of "space laser technology" at the border with Mexico to address the increased flow of migrants.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, the Georgia representative praised Israel's unmanned defense systems, an apparent reference to the Iron Beam, a high energy laser weapon developed by Israeli defense.

Taylor Greene accompanied the publication with a screenshot of a proposed amendment to the aid bill for Israel which reads: "with the funds made available by this Act, the necessary sums will be used for the development of space laser technology on the southwest border."

The congresswoman has become notorious over the years for her controversial comments, many of which are derived from online conspiracy theories. In 2018, she spread a theory on Facebook in which she claimed that the California wildfires that year had been caused by an energy beam from space, owned by several businessmen, including the Rothschild family. Greene claimed that witnesses saw "lasers or blue beams of light causing the fires," which she believed were caused by "space solar generators" that beam energy back down to earth.

As Newsweek recalled, Taylor Greene also sparked controversy around the Ukraine conflict by "accusing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is Jewish, of having a Nazi army." On the topic of Ukraine, the congresswoman also proposed another amendment directed at the aid bill for Ukraine, in which she proposed that members of Congress who vote in favor of the supplementary funding for the European country, have to enlist in the Ukrainian army.

In an opinion piece for MSNBC, Clarissa-Jan Lim argues that although Taylor Greene's comments don't seem to be meant to be taken seriously and it's hard when that is the purpose. "Greene has long opposed sending more aid to Ukraine, and the slate of ludicrous amendments that she introduced to Johnson's newly unveiled aid package is presumably meant to troll her colleagues and send a message about her stance on border security", Lim said.

"The reference to space lasers, however, suggests that even Greene may understand on some level how unserious she is", concluded the reporter.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is a congresswoman representing Georgia's 14th District on behalf of the Republican Party.
