As a parent, depending on the job you have, it never crosses your mind that your child can be harmed at your workplace. Unfortunately for a Los Angeles mother, this has become her reality.

According to the LA Times, Ricardo Augusto Utuy has been arrested under the suspicion of fatally stabbing his co-worker’s 3-year-old daughter at their workplace in downtown Los Angeles.

Detectives have yet to determine what motivated Utuy, 34, of repeatedly stabbing “Baby Ruby” Vasquez without warning at her mother’s workplace, a clothing factory in Los Angeles on Monday night.

“This individual did something that was unthinkable. a most heinous act to a very young child,” Sgt. Moses Castillo told KTLA-TV. “Anyone who recognizes his photograph…tell us what you know about him, what history he may have.”

The site reports that Utuy, who was arrested by police Tuesday morning, had worked at the factory for only two weeks. He was said to be seen laughing and talking to himself and did things that made co-workers believe that he was “not all there.”

It is said that the alleged killer and the child’s mother had minimal to no contact with one another so the motive for this heinous crime is up in the air.

Detective Moses Castillo believes that due to the nature of this crime, there may be other unreported cases Utuy may be involved in.

"Anybody that's capable of doing this heinous act to a young child is capable of doing anything," Castillo said.

Police officers reveal that Baby Ruby has just been picke dup from daycare and dropped off at her mother’s work when she was killed. The girl’s mother stepped away from her work station shortly before 5p.m. when police say that Utuy attacked the little girl with a knife out of nowhere, stabbing her multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Ruby was immediately taken to a neighborhood hospital where she later passed away.

Utuy is currently being held on $1million bail pending formal charges.
