Last Friday, automotive giants BMW and Toyota announced a joint venture to share its technology and engineering innovations to better position the companies to lead into a future of sustainable mobility.

Last week, Akio Toyoda revealed some of the ambitions he had of the partnership, "BMW and Toyota both want to make ever-better cars. We respect each other. That is why we already can take the next step together. Toyota is strong in environment-friendly hybrids and fuel cells... I believe BMW's strength is developing sports cars. I get so excited thinking about the cars that will result from this relationship."

After initial hints on the possibilities of a joint sports car, new rumors are surfacing to explore just how far the brands can run with the idea. According to Automotive News Europe, a BMW spokeswman in Munich says that BMW's vehicle, "will be a sustainable sports car with environmentally friendly technology. We are developing the architceture and components for this future car."

Furthermore, a business insider sees an opportunity for the collaboration to serve as a catalyst for the revival of the Toyota Supra, possibly using BMW 6-series architecture. Placing emphasis on Toyota's leadership in hybrid system technology, BMW's expertise in carbon fiber construction, as well as their joint efforts in fuel-cell technology, a new Toyota halo can bring forth a new generation of fuel efficiency.

A senior BMW manager neither confirmed nor denied the rumor. "Anything is possible. The key factor is that the products of both companies retain their own individual character, despite jointly developed technologies."

Further speculations did not rule out the possibilities of a BMW i8 based Lexus either.
