Former President Donald Trump erroneously used the word “gay” instead of “great" when he attempted to say his infamous campaign motto to a crowd at a Friday rally.

“If you want to stop the destruction of our country and save the American dream, you have to vote Republican,” Trump told the crowd in Wilmington in North Carolina.

Trump was in Wilmington to show his support for Tedd Budd, who is the Republican nominee in North Carolina for the US Senate this November.

“Joe Biden and the Democrat arsonists do not care one bit about the pain and suffering they’re causing you, your family or our once-great country.”

“I was going to use an expression: We have to keep our country gay,” Trump said. In what may have been an attempt at a smooth transition to cushion the mistake, he followed it by saying, “But I mean, it’s not, for some reason it’s not great anymore.”

Those present during the rally did not immediately react to the gaffe, but some people on social media had quite the field day over Trump's mistake.

“We have to keep our country gay-pur-puh.” – Donald Trump. So then he is against DeSantis’ Don’t Say Gay initiative,” filmmaker Jeremy Newberger tweeted.

Another user who noticed the interchange of wordings of the former president sarcastically wrote, “Trump wants to keep our country gay, I am so happy that Trump has come out as an LGBTQ+ ally.”

Someone even quote retweeted the uploaded video of Trump’s mistake and said, “'Keep our country gay' damn, I think imma vote for him next time.”

The former president once gave President Joe Biden the nickname “Sleepy Joe,” and users have been non-stop in claiming that Trump has been suffering from dementia.

Joining the comments, journalist Holly Figueroa O’Reilly mentioned about how people love talking about Biden’s “speech impediment” while “ignoring Trump’s obvious dementia.”

“Donald’s dementia really showed last night! Keep our country gay was icing on the cake,” said one Twitter user.
