Twins Born 87 Days Apart: Amy And Katie Elliot Are Their Mother's Miracles

The story of a set of twins born 87 days apart may now be heading for the record books.

The miracle babies made their strange way into the world nearly three months apart.

Amy Elliott was born on June 1, 2012. She was four months premature and weighed little more than one pound. After the twins' mother, 34-year-old Maria Jones-Elliott, stopped having contractions, doctors decided to take their chances, leaving sister Katie to grow in the womb.

There was a period when Jones-Elliot said she wasn't sure of either of her twin daughters would make it The Daily Mirror reports.

"The doctors told me there was very little hope of them surviving as they were so premature," she told the Mirror.

Surprisingly, Katie remained right where she was in her mother's stomach until doctors at Waterford Regional Hospital induced labor on Aug. 27, 2012. Katie weighed the better part of six pounds when she was delivered unlike her diminutive preemie twin.

The Elliot twins born 87 days apart will enter the record books as "longest interval between the birth of twins."
