The USA womens national team advanced to the Women's World Cup quarterfinals with a 2-0 over 10-woman Colombia in their round of 16 battle Monday night in Edmonton, Alberta. They knew that they would have a challenging game because Colombia is a very good opponent. USA advanced without Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday after yellow cards so early in the first half of the match. For this reason Holiday will be suspended for the U.S. Women’s quarterfinal match against China, after she picked up her second yellow card in Canada.

Challenged in the first half by a team that, for whatever else Colombia lacked, played with all the joy of competition that at times seems absent alongside its superior athleticism and single-minded purpose, but Americans advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory. Second half goal from Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd (penalty) surface the way for USA team.

Colombian keeper Catalina Perez drew a red card for bringing down Morgan on the edge of the box, and although Abby Wambach missed the penalty, the Americans girls had the luxury of playing 11 on 10 the rest of the game. Minutes later, Holiday quick pass to Ali Krieger kept the ball moving and prevented the Colombian defense from setting up before Krieger played in Morgan for the first goal.

Fabian Toborda, Colombian coach says about his team “they play with an iron-will from the beginning to the end of this match, and at times the best team in the world didn’t look that good because of the way we performed”, said Tobarda. For Colombia not having the goalkeeper and having a player down of course had a big impact in the second half. However, Colombia team show to the world how much national soccer team has improved. Perhaps, if the goalkeeper was not sent off the score-line the history have been different for USA team.

USA team will meet China Friday night in Ottawa for semifinals at 7:30 p.m. ET, while Germany Vs. France will face each other for another place, same day at 4:00 p.m. ET. Watch the highlights from FIFA Women's World Cup here.
