Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder are over. The Vampire Diaries costars, who play Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore on the CW hit show have called it quit after more than three years together.

Ian and Nina are "consummate professionals," and "will continue to work together and remain best friends, which is where the relationship started," a source told the mag about the break-up.

Last fall, Dobrev opened up to Seventeen magazine about falling for Somerhalder. "I didn't want to be dating one of my costars -- my goal on the show was to be professional," she admitted. "But sometimes you can't help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long -- which I did for a really, really long time."

Could it be that the break up was already in the works?

Somerhalder may have alluded to the breakup on Twitter Thursday morning, where he posted, "A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: People change and forget to tell each other. -Lillian Hellman, playwright (1905-1984)."

Fans are hoping that this split won't affect the "Vampire Diaries" stars on set. However, many relationships between co-stars have ended, and their work hasn't suffered.

"One Tree Hill" stars Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush were married and divorced while working together, as well as "Dexter" stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter.

The Vampire Diaries is currently in its fourth season on the CW. In February, the network renewed the supernatural drama for a fifth season. Filming will begin later this year; in the meantime, Dobrev, 24, will spend the summer shooting the Fox movie Let's Be Cops, which also stars New Girl's Jake Johnson and Happy Endings' Damon Wayans Jr.
