People often compare Kate Middleton to the late Princess Diana because of her charisma, fashion sense and parenting style. Despite their similarities, however, there is one thing that makes Kate different from her late mother-in-law. Unlike Princess Diana, Kate gets along really well with the royal family.

Being unable to get along well with the family of Prince Charles was one of Princess Diana’s greatest frustrations when she was alive, and she carried it with her like a boulder on her chest until her death. Although Kate’s ways remind many people of the late Princess of Wales, many still consider the Duchess of Cambridge the luckier one because she has successfully won the approval of Prince William’s family.

It is not a secret that Princess Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles was a tumultuous one. Her load could have been lighter if she had the support of Prince Charles’ family when the scandal of the Prince of Wales was exposed, but she did not. In fact, she never really got to be close to her royal in-laws, so she always felt like she was in prison when she became a royal.

Some royal followers believe that their huge age difference when they married into the royal family has also a lot to do with how Kate Middleton and Princess Diana’s relationships with the royal family differ. Unlike Kate, who was already 29 when she married Prince William, who was 28, Princess Diana had just turned 20 before she married the 32-year-old Prince Charles.

According to royal followers, Princess Diana was too emotionally young when she married the Prince of Wales to be able stand the test of time. “I doubt Diana had a clue how vicious and invasive the press and celebrity culture could be when Charles first popped the question,” one royal follower noted.

Some also point out that their family backgrounds have to do with how they deal with their in-laws. Unlike Kate, who grew up in a decent and happy family, Princess Diana reportedly had deep-seated issues as a child because of her parents’ divorce. Because of the divorce of her parents, she grew up essentially without a mother.

Others also note that Kate does not handle her personal problems the same way as Princess Diana did. While no one can tell if Kate is really happy with her choice to marry a prince, she’s good at keeping up appearances. In the eyes of the public, she’s happy and content with her current life. Princess Diana was different.

As one royal follower noted, Diana was not only lousy at keeping up appearances after her marriage congealed, but she didn’t even try to do so. “I would say she was a very different character from Kate, wore her heart on her sleeve, was conspicuously unhappy in front of gossipy people,” the royal follower said. Another also noted how Princess Diana “aired her dirty laundry” in public and humiliated Queen Elizabeth after she left the Palace.

Nobody knows if Kate also has misgivings about the royal family or if she’s actually as unhappy as Princess Diana is behind closed doors, but one thing is for sure — she’s mature enough to know how to handle her personal issues and blend in well with the royals.
