In a highly expected announcement (which surely disappointed most), President Enrique Peña Nieto said his wife Angelica Rivera wished to clarify the endless questions about their multimillion-dollar home. Journalist Carmen Aristegui and her team, investigated the mansion in question and found it is in fact under Ingenieria Inmobiliaria del Centro’s name, a subsidiary of Grupo Higa, which has benefited from public works contracts granted by none other than Enrique Peña Nieto. Amidst the crisis the government is going through, their initial response was to say the home in the capital's most exclusive neighborhood belonged to first lady and former actress Angelica Rivera. "I hope that the clarification that my wife will personally give can clear up how it was that this property came about, something that was done based on her work," said the president.

Later on, Rivera released a 7-minute video in which she explained melodramatically how, after 25 years of working with the network Televisa and celebrating “numerous contracts” with the company, she saved the money to acquire the mansion, which will be payed in its totality in 8 years, with a 9 percent interest rate. “After accusations that have questioned my honorability, I want to tell you I have nothing to hide; I have worked all my life and thanks to that I am an independent woman who’s been able to build an honest patrimony through hard work.”

To conclude, the First Lady said she plans on selling the luxurious residence as she has only achieved to pay less than 30 percent at this point and hopes to end the offenses it is bringing to her family. “I want to communicate I have decided to sell the rights of the contract because I don’t want this to continue being an excuse to offend and bring defamation to my family.”

The clarification video has brought even further outrage to the people of Mexico who are in the middle of a violence and instability crisis after the disappearance of the 43 students from Ayotzinapa. Rivera's speech (which she surprisingly read) was full of indignation and affirmations implying that she did not owe this explanation to anyone, as the millionaire purchase was exclusively personal; even so she decided to publicly clarify and sell the house.
