Thousands of people dressed up as characters from Roberto Gómez Bolaños’ famous shows at the Carnival in Brazil! There were even groups of Samba singing famous ‘Chespirito’ phrases in the center of Copacabana. “From Acapulco to the neighborhood of Peixoto, Rio de Janeiro. A genius is born in February, who charmed the entire world.” As soon as the music goes off, people dressed up as ‘El Chavo del Ocho’, ‘Doña Florinda’, ‘Doña Clotilde’, ‘El Chapulín Colorado’ and ‘Ñoño’ emerged, in remembrance of Roberto Gómez Bolaños, whose death shook the South American country last year.

‘Chaves’ is what they call Bolaños in Brazil instead of ‘Chespirito’ who is considered a legend there. In a circle with guitars and drums, publicist André Aires and seven Brazilian friends of his sing a samba song they composed in honor of their idol ‘Chaves’. “He was huge in Brazil. We used to watch his TV show before going to school. We grew up with him, he broke into all audiences,” remembered Aires. “This group we’ve organized is much more than just a tribute to Bolaños; it is bringing nostalgia into Carnival, so we can feel like children again in this very special time for Brazil.”

Even though these particular “blocks” were themed to pay tribute to Bolaños, people dressed as ‘Chespirito’ and ‘Chavos del Ocho’ could be seen all over Carnival. A salesperson at a costume shop said, “‘El Chapulín Colorado’ is no doubt one of the most popular ones; everyone knows him,” she explained.
