Valve HTC Vive Virtual Reality Half Life
Valve announced its cooperation with HTC to create a new virtual reality video game. Valve

Earlier this week at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, renowned "Half Life" game developer Valve hosted a special press session that announced a joint project with HC to develop video game applications for the Taiwanese tech company's new HTC Vive virtual reality helmet. Following the conference, HTC chairwoman Cher Wang accidently slipped a statement suggesting "Half Life 3" is in the works.

"We are co-operating with Half-life," said Cher during the interview with BBC. "And I think... I hope, you know, it will be on it.

Just as fans become hopeful, PR immediately stepped in to perform damage limitation. Valve later told the BBC that there is no development for "Half Life 3" at this time. Cher also addressed the incident and issued a follow-up statement:

"Regarding my BBC interview with Dave Lee yesterday, I would like to apologise for any confusion caused when I referred to individual games titles," Wang said.

"In response to a question on specific games, I misspoke when I referred to our working together with Valve on a particular game, when instead I meant our collaboration with Valve on developing next-generation virtual reality experiences for gaming.

"I am very excited about the work we are doing with Valve, and look forward to bringing our HTC Vive to market later this year."

Valve and HTC have since remained vague on the incident. However, Valve programmer Jeep Barnett recently had a chat with Kotaku and revealed a little bit more on the situation.

"We're not saying 'no' but we don't know what the right thing is [yet]," explained Barnett. "Is Half-Life a good fit? Is Left 4 Dead a good fit? Is a new franchise a good fit? I don't know yet. We're really trying to cover the broad spectrum of what we could do, and then we'll start focusing on spearheading that."

"We've said, 'Let's take some existing art and see how it fits,'" Barnett continued. "So yeah, we'll grab some headcrabs, we'll grab the machine guns from Half Life, the rocket launcher - all those different fun things - and see how they play in VR. But right now, it's a tool for exploring the different kind of game designs we want to do."

According to the insider, Portal seems to be the likeliest application for the HC Vive VR headset. Finally, Barnett hinted that an unannounced video game demo is scheduled to launch with Vive by November 2015.

Stay tuned as we continue to learn more about the joint project between Valve and HTC. We will also continue to share updates regarding "Half Life 3" as well. You know what they say: You can't turn a 'no' into a 'yes' without a 'maybe' first.
