California Senator Ricardo Lara, author of Senate Bill 716, which if enacted would make California the first state to prohibit the use of the elephant bullhook, received The Humane Society of the United States’ 2015 Humane Legislator Award from actress Kate Del Castillo at a private event. The Humane Society is the nation’s largest animal protection organization, which has celebrated the protection of all animals and confronted all forms of cruelty for 60 years. In addition, the HSUS cares for more than 100,000 animals each year, and prevents cruelty to millions more through our advocacy campaigns.

Senator Lara said the following statement upon receiving the recognition: “I am humbled and honored to receive this recognition from The Humane Society of the United States for taking a stand against animal abuse, particularly for elephants. It’s time that California lead the nation by declaring that no animal should be subject to mistreatment under any circumstance. I look forward to continuing the fight as my bill to ban the use of bullhooks moves forward.”

Del Castillo said: “I am honored to stand with The Humane Society of the United States to praise Senator Lara for his leadership on behalf of animals. Because of him, the animals in California are better protected from so many forms of cruelty.”
