Showtime's "Penny Dreadful" series Showtime

“Penny Dreadful” is an upcoming horror series for Showtime, which despite its terrifying trailer has a deeply intellectual and literary background. The series, which is set to premiere on Showtime on May 11, is set to bring together several infamous Victorian literary characters. The newly released “Penny Dreadful” trailer showcases the merging of multiple classic horror tales, set in Victorian London, Dr. Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, Frankenstein’s creature, Count Dracula, and even Mina Harker, will all exist in the same realm, creating a supernatural-infused, bloody, and deeply passionate plot.

“I thought there was incredible excitement to slamming all those myths together,” creator John Logan revealed to Entertainment Weekly. Logan is best known for his work on the silver screen, namely his Academy Award nominated films, “Gladiator” and “The Aviator.” Now Logan, along with executive producer Sam Mendes will create a new eerie world, to the likes that viewers have never seen before.

Logan did confess that the series is “highly erotic, very bloody” however there is still a human element to the series with an American sharpshooter, Ethan Chandler, played by Josh Hartnett and Vanessa Ives, a mysteriously composed heroine, played by Eva Green, who’s battling her own demons. “It’s about building a family,” says Logan. “Admittedly, the creepiest family you can imagine.”

However, just because viewers will be drawn to specific characters of the ensemble cast of “Penny Dreadful,” the series will still leave be bone chilling. “When I was first talking to Sam Mendes about it, the word I came up with was disturbing,” says Logan. “It’s not enough to scare people because that’s a cheaper sensation. But to unsettle and disturb people on a deeper level because they feel familiarity with monstrous characters is really our goal.”

“Penny Dreadful” premieres Sunday, May 11 at 10 p.m. on Showtime. Check out the first full trailer, below.
