Rumors have been running rampant that Lionel Messi could force a move out of Barcelona at the end of the season. Because of his nearly $300 million dollar exit clause with FC Barcelona, the clubs that could afford to sign the Argentine superstar are few and far between. One of those teams is Barcelona’s La Liga rival, Real Madrid. On Friday, Los Blancos manager, Carlo Ancelotti, added fuel to the fire by saying he would be interested in signing Messi and teaming him up with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi and his father Jorge all but confirmed that they would consider all options available to them at the end of the La Liga season and that despite being happy in Barcelona, a move to another team was not outside the realm of possibility. More than likely Messi will not leave Barcelona, and this most recent controversy could just be a ploy to extend his contract. Even if Messi were to leave Camp Nou, the Santiago Bernabeu would be the last place Barca would want to send him. More than likely Messi would welcome a move to the English Premier League where he could play for either Manchester United or Manchester City.

As farfetched as it may seem, other high profile soccer stars have moved from Barcelona to Real Madrid in the past like Luis Milla, Bernd Schuster, Michael Laudrup, Luis Figo and current FC Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique. The Italian coach of Real Madrid would absolutely relish the chance to add a player like Messi to the Los Blancos and knows what adding could him mean to the already intense El Clasico rivalry.

“Messi could be a fix at Real Madrid,” said Ancelotti. “All quality teams have space in their side for quality players.”

If Messi were to join Real Madrid, he would team up with longtime rival, Ronaldo. It’s no secret that the two stars do not like each other and last week rumors circulated that Ronaldo’s nickname for Messi in the Madrid locker room is “Motherf---er”. The combination of the past six winners of the Ballon d’or on the same side of the pitch could be the most lethal duo in soccer history, however, Ronaldo’s ego and obsession with personal accolades would most likely be a road block in any deal for Messi.

More than likely for a move like this to happen, Ronaldo, who in August talked highly of his love for Manchester United and about returning to Old Trafford before his career was over, would be moved to the EPL in order to make room for Messi and team him with James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale. Regardless of what happens, it certainly will be interesting to watch the Messi drama unfold over the remainder of his current campaign with Barcelona.
