Monday night marked the ever important transfer deadline for most of the clubs in European soccer. The deadline did not disappoint as deals went down to the wire and rumors flew as fast as swans throughout the final hours. When the dust settled, and the contracts were signed, the English Premier League had spent a transfer window record $1.4 Billion dollars (£835 Million). Yes you read that correctly, it was not a typo, the EPL alone spent over a billion dollars on soccer players this summer.
Highlighting the final day was Colombian striker, Radamel Falcao who as of Monday morning was believed to be headed to one of three Premier League teams. Manchester United made a late swoop to steal Falcao away from cross town rivals Manchester City and Premier League powerhouse Arsenal. Manchester United was not done making moves however, in the final hours of the transfer deadline, United officially signed center back, Daley Blind, sold Danny Welbeck to Arsenal and were minutes away from completing a deadline deal with Everton for Tom Cleverly, but the deal fell apart at the last minute.
Manchester United spent the most of any team throughout Europe during this transfer window as new coach Louis Van Gaal spent nearly $250 Million over the summer. For the first time in recent memory, EPL officials gave teams “stoppage time” on deadline day as most of the transfers were announced after the 6 p.m. EST cut off. EPL officials gave teams a one hour grace period to finalize physicals and sign contracts for deals that had already started during the transfer window.
Other notable players who were moved on Monday were Manchester City’s Alvaro Negredo who was loaned to Valencia instead of moved permanently which all but ended City’s chances of signing Falcao due to UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Rules. City also completed a loan for Micah Richards who was sent to Italy’s Florentina club. Relatively unknown EPL club, Hull, were surprisingly the busiest team on deadline day, completing four transfers in the final hours of the window including, Palermo striker Abel Hernandez, Hatem Ben Arfa, Gaston Ramirez and Mo Diame.
Crystal Palace opened up their pocket books this summer and completed a record summer for them with the signing of James McArthur a midfielder from Wigan. The record transfer window for the EPL comes after a new television deal that was worth almost $5 Billion, 70 percent higher than the previous television deal. Interestingly, over 40 percent of the total spending done this summer was done by teams in the UEFA Champions League, and that does not include Manchester United’s total. Over half the signings were for players outside the EPL, and the four best clubs from last season, did not sign any players on deadline day, and had relatively low spending totals. Liverpool, Chelsea and last year’s Champions Manchester City, spent a combined $423 million dollars.
