Mexican media sources confirmed on Tuesday that Alfonso Navarrete Prida, secretary of Mexico’s Department of Labor and Social Planning (STPS), fell victim on Sunday to a robbery in a mall located in the Mexico City neighborhood of Polanco, where an unidentified armed suspect held him up for a watch valued at approximately 300,000 pesos (about $22,000). Navarrete Prida says he has filed a report with authorities, who say the labor secretary had been unaccompanied by a security escort, and was intercepted on his way into the mall.

Mexico City Attorney General Rodolfo Ríos Garza confirmed the robbery on Monday, saying, “Basically it was a robbery of a watch. I’m not going to comment on the brand, the secretary has already made his declaration on how the events transpired and, of course, we are investigating the case.” But despite the attorney general’s refusal to give details on the stolen watch, Excelsior reports that it was a Patek Philippe, which are known to be among the most expensive in the world.

Aristegui Noticias noted, also on Tuesday, that Navarrete Prida sent a letter to the website Milenio defending his ownership of 7 luxury cars – as revealed by Aristegui Noticias following the government’s declaration of assets last week. Among those cars, the site notes, were a Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, BMW and a Mini Cooper in addition to a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Grand Overland and a Chevrolet truck. The secretary called his purchase of those cars “absolutely transparent” and offered a list of explanations as to how each of the luxury vehicles had been bought at cut-rate prices
