Everyone knew it was coming and everyone knew it would be big.
Microsoft waited until the very end of the Xbox worldwide event to bring Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, to the stage to unveil all the details about "Call of Duty: Ghost."
The developers and publishers at Activision provided a first look of in-game footage from the next installment of the CoD franchise. Scenes shown at the Xbox event showed the improvement of graphics and motion within the game.
"We could have played it safe and made Modern Warfare 4," said Hirshberg. "There are 122 million Google search results for Modern Warfare 4, a game that doesn't exist. The Dark Knight Rises had 116 million search results. With that much built-in support and anticipation for something we could have done, there were a lot of good reasons to continue that franchise. But we didn't not resting on our laurels. Ghosts delivers a new story, a new world, new characters and new gameplay built on a next gen engine. It's stunning how far it's come."
The game takes place 10 years after the fall of the U.S. government. The Ghosts, the elite soldiers from the remnants of the Special Forces are like the Spartans of the past or the modern day Seal Team Six. They're outgunned and out-manned, but they have the skills to take on a larger enemy force and fight on home turf.
"The series of events that lead to America's slide from being the top dog in the world to being on the second tier and having someone come and eat our lunch, it feels very plausible," Gaghan says. "To create drama against that backdrop is really fun because the stakes are so high. This is like the survival of America. I find it believable."
And if the game trailer is any indication so will players. The trailer plays as if it is a high-octane action packed military film. From the underwater action to the shootouts and floods.
"We set the gold standard for action in current gen and we're going to do it again for the next gen," said Hirshberg. "This is the most character-driven and emotionally-driven COD game. It's a stunning leap forward for console gaming."
That has a huge part to do with Stephen Gaghan, acclaimed director of the film "Traffic." Gaghan's work on "Traffic," a dour crime drama, and "Syriana" made him the perfect candidate to bring that Hollywood vibe to the "Call of Duty" franchise.
Another interesting aspect added to CoD: Ghost is players will be able to have a canine companion. The dog plays like a teammate and Mark Rubin, Executive Producer of Infinity Ward says, "that you care about [the dogs] as a squad member. You fight for him and he fights for you. He does everything from sniffing out explosives to protecting the team."
"It will be the best Call of Duty game we've ever made," said Activision's Erik Hirschberg.
"Call of Duty: Ghost" is expected to be in stores Nov. 5 for PS3 and Xbox 360. No word on the release date for the PS4 and Xbox One, which are due out later this year.
