The last time Chelsea and Manchester City met, the 2013-2014 Barclays Premier League table was still developing. While the Arsenal Gunners established them early as a force to be reckoned with following a fourth place finish the season prior, both Man City and Chelsea were looking to regain the form that saw the BPL affiliates claim seven league championships combined. Man City returned a championship to Etihad Stadium at the end of the 2011-2012 campaign but weren’t able to repeat the following season thanks to absolute brilliance on the part of Manchester United in Alex Ferguson’s final go-round.
Chelsea’s last League title came in 2010 and with many expecting the club to compete at a high level under coach Jose Mourinho this season, the Blues’ statement victory over Manchester City on Oct. 27 at Stamford Bridge was a clear indication that Mourinho’s side was ready for a strong push through the Premier League. Thanks to goals from Andre Schurrle and Fernando Torres -- who broke a 1-1 tie in the 90th minute -- Chelsea earned a tremendous win that has since propelled them to good standing in the current table with 15 matches remaining.
“I think the first half was our half, we were much better and it’s tough to be much better than a fantastic team and they are a fantastic team,” Mourinho said following the win over Man City. “I think we should have scored more goals in the first because in the second half they scored a great goal and kept us out. It was a great game for both sides and at the end we had the kind of luck that you need to win these matches and I think it will help us moving forward.”
Set to meet once again Monday at Etihad Stadium, Chelsea and Man City will both enter the match playing phenomenal football. City hasn’t dropped a league match since falling to Sunderland on Nov. 10, earning wins in eight-consecutive BPL contests to take control of the Premier League table while the Blues have earned wins in five of their last seven matches, with draws coming against Arsenal and West Ham United.
A win for Manchester City would keep them at the top of the table while a ‘W’ for the Blues would put them in a tie with The Citizens, who currently have 53 points to place them one north of Arsenal.
