If we thought Cristian Castro was using Twitter as a way to get attention because he had nothing better to do, we were wrong. Turns out that the Mexican balladist was preparing us for his biggest eccentricity yet: becoming a rocker. It turns out he’s working with César López, best known as “Vampiro” from the band Jaguares in this new musical project called “La Esfinge” that just released their first single called “Purgatorio.”

In it, a somber Cristian distances himself from his usual perkiness and poppy sound to find his inner rocker. And although many critics have trashed the song and the sound just because it’s Cristian Castro, the truth is this new track brings a refreshing twist of Castro’s voice, and overall sounds like an early 90’s Latin Rock track, which isn’t necessarily something bad.

Castro had expressed his interest in recording a “heavy metal” album back in July, 2013, but no one thought he would actually follow through. However, he kept this new music venture in the down low until now, and we think that it couldn’t hurt checking it out when the full album releases in Feb. 25. Cristian also got together with Mexican rock/punk band Genitallica and posted a photo on his Twitter page of the guys and himself together at a recording studio and later at lunch.

Apparently, a collaboration between them happened, but we’re still not sure if it’s going to come out in La Esfinge or Genitallica’s album. Scroll down to check out Cristian Castro’s new band La Esfinge and their brand new single “Purgatorio” and let us know your thoughts in the comment section below. Do you think Cristian has what it takes to be a heavy metal/rock performer?
