It is no secret that Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez have a special kind of bond. However, their so-called “bromance” has not been always smooth and much of that is tied to the upcoming documentary, “The Captain.”
One part of the said documentary tackled the infamous interview of A-Rod’s interview with Esquire in 2001.
Scott Raab authored that infamous interview. Although he initially planned to tackle Rodriguez as a player, trying to stir up something controversial against Jeter was allegedly not among his intentions.
But with another writer from GQ magazine in town who was also out to write an A-Rod story, he knew he needed to come up with something to get one over the rival scribe.
In the course of the interview, the controversial part appears to be the part where Raab asked Rodriguez about his friendship and rivalry with Jeter.
“No, there’s not a rivalry at all. Not even, I mean rivalry? Like, ours is such a brotherhood that there’s definitely no rivalry there. And it’s weird, because even with my brother [we] have a little rivalry,” Rodriguez said. “But with Derek, I’m his biggest fan and I think it’s vice versa.”
However, Raab hit the spot when he asked about the character of the five-time World Series champion.
“He’s reserved, quiet. Jeter’s been blessed with great talent around him. So he’s never had to lead. He doesn’t have to, he can just go and play and have fun, and hit second. I mean, you know, hitting second is totally different than hitting third or fourth in a lineup because you go into New York trying to stop Bernie [Williams] and [Paul] O’Neill and everybody. You never say, ‘Don’t let Derek beat you.’ That’s never your concern,” Rodriguez said at the time.
The comments bothered Jeter and carry on to this day. This was despite A-Rod apologizing to Jeter at the time.
