With Easter Sunday quickly approaching and Holy Week already underway, Christians across the globe are beginning their ritualistic religious and family practices for one of the most celebrated holidays of the year. A time for followers to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his death, Easter is the oldest Christian holiday and one that is considered to be the most important day in the church on a yearly basis. While eggs are seen as symbols of joy and celebration and remain at the focal point of the Easter season, many other unique practices help make this season special.
Officially beginning on Palm Sunday – which recently fell on March 20 – Holy Week includes additional religious holidays that make the period of utmost importance to practicing Christians. A crucial time in the Christian year, Holy Week sees the celebration of Maundy Thursday – also known as Holy Thursday – Good Friday and of course, Easter Sunday. Holy Thursday falls on the Thursday before Easter and it commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. The fifth day of the Holy Week, Holy Thursday is followed by Good Friday, a date observed by Christians to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
While following through with religious practices is certainly at the top of the list when it comes to importance, the gathering of family and friends is also an essential part of the Easter season. Many families choose to have loved ones over their house for large dinners while others prefer to gather at their favorite restaurants but no matter what the location is, the main idea behind the date is celebrating the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ together as a family.
