“Gremlins” is set to return after WarnerMedia ordered a 10-episode prequel series earlier this week. News of the order comes after WarnerMedia announced that it is preparing to launch its own streaming platform that could rival Netflix, Amazon and more.

The upcoming series, titled “Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai,” was put into production in February. It will tell the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing met Gizmo, a young furry creature that is part of the Mogwai. It would be set in the 1920s, when the boy was still living in Shanghai.

This is like telling the backstory of how Sam ended up in the United States and how he met Gizmo and the teenage thief called Elle. It will show how the 10-year-old Chinese citizen opened his antique shop and took care of the furry creature there. Sam grew up to become the owner of the popular establishment that was shown in the original “Gremlins” movies that were released in 1984 and 1990.

“Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering and sometimes battling colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore,” the animated prequel’s synopsis reads. “On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.”

Tze Chun, who also wrote “Gotham,” was signed up to serve as the writer of this animated TV adaptation. Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and Sam Register were named executive producers for Amblin Television. “Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai” is produced by Amblin in association with Warner Bros. Animation.

The “Gremlins” movie where this animation was based on did great at the box office when it was released in 1984. Its huge success paved the way for the horror comedy flick to return to the silver screen in 1990, and the follow-up was titled “Gremlins 2: The New Batch.”

As WarnerMedia joins the streaming service business, it plans to produce and release more shows like “Tokyo Vice,” “Love Life” and “Dune: The Sisterhood.” “Gremlins: Secrets Of The Mogwai” is one of the firsts to be streamed on the platform as it gradually enters the market.
