Attention time travelers from 1999: If you're attempting to use your Hotmail email account today, you're likely out of luck. Users across the Internet are reporting Microsoft's Hotmail email service is currently down for the third day in a row, as well as various other issues with the service, according to numerous Twitter reports and

Hotmail appears to indeed be suffering an outage, shutting down its email service entirely for some users, while some have just been locked out of their mobile Hotmail accounts. Hotmail looks to have first gone down Monday, Jan. 7 around 3 p.m. EST.

If your Hotmail account appears to be down or are experiencing other issues with your account, here's some troubleshooting tips to help narrow down the cause of the service issue via

"Can you reproduce the problem by repeating the same steps? If not, it may have been a temporary glitch.

If you're having trouble accessing a certain web site, make sure there isn't a problem with your Internet connection. Can you reach other web sites successfully?

Does the same issue appear if you use a different device or Internet connection?

Have you recently changed any settings or installed web browser plug-ins, firewall software, or other upgrades that might be causing trouble?"

Microsoft finally commented on the service outage late Tuesday, but did little to explain the problem, assuage users' concerns about when Hotmail would return.

"Hotmail is working for all web users and POP-based accounts. Some mobile device users relying on EAS (Active Sync) may see problems accessing their email, calendar and contacts. We are working to restore their access," Microsoft wrote in a statement on its Hotmail page late Jan. 8.

Following those ambiguous words of explanation, Microsoft released another statement admitting the issues were ongoing with Hotmail, and that essentially they have no idea how long the service will be down.

"Fixing the problem is taking longer than we hoped. We'll provide an update by Jan 09 7:20 AM. We apologize for the lengthy interruption in service," Microsoft wrote at 3:22 a.m. Jan. 9. And yet, still no update.

Understandably, users are voicing their disappointment with Microsoft, Hotmail and the service interruption in general on Twitter.
