Prince Charles partially blamed himself for the fallout of his marriage to Princess Diana. The heir to the throne also felt like a “terrible sense of failure” for not trying harder to make his relationship work.
In the book “The Firm,” royal author Penny Junor said that the Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage became very unhappy. At one point, Prince Charles decided to give up on trying to fix what was already broken because he realized that he isn’t the person who could help Princess Diana.
“He felt desperate, hopeless and guilty, and to this day he feels a terrible sense of failure for not having been able to make his marriage work,” Junor said. The royal author also acknowledged the fact that there were some moments of pure happiness and bliss during the royal couple’s marriage. But at the end of the day, they weren’t enough to sustain a long and lasting union.
“There were moments of intense pleasure, the children brought huge joy and there was laughter and jokes and fun, but not enough to counter the difficulties. As time went by the gulf between them became no longer bridgeable,” she said.
Meanwhile, it also became evident how Princess Diana didn’t exert as much effort to make her marriage work either. The late royal had recurring mood swings and emotional outbursts that her ex-husband didn’t know how to deal with.
According to Lady Pamela Hicks, Princess Diana was also quite spiteful and unkind to her husband. The mom of two also seemingly forgot the fact that Prince Charles was the type of man who longed for support and encouragement from his wife.
But despite their struggles, Prince Charles still broke down after learning that Princess Diana had died. In the book “The Duchess: The Untold Story,” Junor said that the future king wept for his sons, who have lost their mother at such a young age.
He also wept over the thought that his and Princess Diana’s relationship shouldn’t have ended negatively. At the end of the day, Prince Charles once again blamed himself for not being able to help Princess Diana.
