Based on the line of succession, Prince William will automatically be the next king once the reign of Prince Charles as the head of the British monarchy ends. As Prince William takes over his royal duties as the King of England, he will effect a whole slew of changes in the lives of every royal family, including the life of his sister-in-law, Meghan Markle.

Each time a new king or queen ascends the throne, the life of pretty much everyone connected to the new king or queen changes. In the case of Prince William, that includes Meghan.

Although the changes in Meghan’s life will not be as significant as the changes in Kate Middleton’s, Prince William’s reign will still be a huge turnaround for her. According to former royal butler Grant Harrold, Meghan will particularly see these changes in her royal duties.

“The Duchess of Sussex will have an important role to develop as one day she will be sister-in-law to the king,” Harrold said. “She will take on duties on behalf of the monarch as we see the royals do today for the Queen,” he added.

A few months before Meghan gave birth to Baby Archie, she spent her summer going on a solo royal trip with Queen Elizabeth. According to Harrold, such visits will intensify once Prince William becomes king. “Both royal duchesses have important roles to fulfill,” he said, referring to Kate as the other duchess.

According to Harrold, Meghan will need to travel more once her brother-in-law becomes king as she meets with various organizations and charities around the world. Her current role as the Patron of the Royal Foundation Forum has been preparing her well for her future role as it already exposes her to different forms of humanitarian work.

Meghan will also take part in more royal engagements when Prince William becomes king. As King William hosts gatherings with heads of state and prime ministers from around the globe, Meghan and Prince Harry will have to be readily available all the time to sit in for William and Kate if they are unable to make it.

Although Prince Harry will probably never rule the commonwealth, Prince William’s future ascension to the throne will mean that Meghan’s husband will move up in the line of succession. The closer Prince Harry gets to the throne, the more royal duties he and his wife need to perform.
