A man in California was arrested after allegedly trying to drown his wife before burying her alive in the sand. Jose Luis Mares III, 23 and his wife went to Coronado Beach in San Diego Wednesday evening but had gotten into an argument upon which Mares began attacking his wife.

In statement from the Coronado Police Department:

"He attempted to throw her in the ocean, then burying her in a hole in the sand," police said.

WNCT reported that his wife managed to escape and ran from the beach to the street on a nearby sidewalk on Ocean Boulevard where a passerby spotted her and called 911. Responding officers and paramedics arrived at the scene around 9pm and found the badly injured wife. After being given primary treatment, she was brought to a San Diego trauma center where she was given further care for her injuries.

The victim told investigators her husband had become enraged during their argument. He started to assault her, and dragged her into the surf and then took her near a lifeguard tower and tried burying her in the sand.

Detective Ryan Brennan with the Coronado Police Department said :

“She said there was a hole in the ground and the hole had previously been there from probably kids digging it during the day. But during the struggle, she said he threw her in that hole when he began putting sand on top of her”.

The wife also said her husband repeatedly kicked her but then stopped and ran off.

Mares was later located by authorities hiding in the backyard of a residence less than a mile away in Alameda Boulevard. He was charged with attempted murder, assault causing bodily injury, domestic violence , false imprisonment and violating terms of his parole.

According to the California Department of Corrections, Mares was a parolee previously convicted for carjacking and burglary, Fox5 San Diego wrote.

Online police records show the suspect was booked into the San Diego Central Jail on Thursday and is being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for March 5. At this time, it is not yet clear if Mares has obtained legal representation or if he has entered a plea.
