An I-40 crash occurred in Jefferson County, Tennessee, on Wednesday afternoon. A church bus carrying senior adults careened across the median and collided into a tractor-trailer and an SUV head-on. Eight victims lost their lives in the shocking accident.

The incident occurred near mile marker 423 at about 2 p.m. The chruch bus was intially traveling eastbound when a sudden loss of control caused it to veer over the median. According to officials, the I-40 crash caused both lanes of the highway to close in order for emergency crews to take care of the crash site.

"(The bus) traveled across the median and struck a tractor-trailer and passenger car that were traveling westbound. The tractor-trailer caught fire and the bus overturned. There are multiple fatalities and injuries at this time," announced Tennessee Department of Safety spokeswoman Dalya Qualls.

According to local media reports, the victims that died from the I-40 crash include six senior adults from the church bus, one person from the tractor trailer, as well as a victim from the SUV. At least four victims were rushed to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville and other local area hospitals via helicopter.

Finally, authorities report that the church bus had lost control on the I-40 after its left front tire popped, causing the bus to lose control. The impact caused the tractor trailer truck to immediately catch fire, said Dalya Qualls. The bus was knocked on its side.
