Mexican Secretary for the Interior, Miguel Angel Osorio, today named Humberto Mayans as coordinator for Comprehensive Migration for the Southern Border. Osorio said that the program, which was announced by President Enrique Peña Nieto last week, will strengthen state policy on immigration. He added that it will modernize the operation of the 12 official international crossings and checkpoints, transforming them into Comprehensive Care Centers for Border Traffic.

By making this announcement, the head of the Interior stated that the brand new entity would allow a closer partnership with the border states, which would enable them to fulfill the operations of that region more effectively and better serve the migratory flow. He also called on federal institutions and state and municipal governments of Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo and Tabasco for support.

Meanwhile, Mayans, who until now served as chairman of the Committee on Border Affairs in the Senate, said he will work to make the South a prosperous and secure border. He said the new strategy emphasizes improving the life of the population, as well as full respect for human rights and dignity of people living and passing through the border. He particularly stressed attention to unaccompanied minors, whose circumstances represent a humanitarian emergency.
