Shawn Mendes and Taylor Swift may not have known each other for a long time, but they’re two of Hollywood’s best buddies. In fact, TIME Magazine chose Mendes to pen a touching tribute for the female musician, who happens to be in the magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list this 2019.

In his tribute, Mendes revealed that he has long been a fan of Swift and that it wasn’t until he met her that he got to know her and understood how wonderful she is as a person. He also praised Swift for her musical gift, saying that she is “the master of putting the perfect amount of thought into not overthinking” and that’s why everybody can relate to her songs very well.

“The magic of Taylor Swift doesn’t come from the lights, dancers or fireworks, but from the electrifying connection that she has with the people who are there to see her,” Mendes said. The “In My Blood” singer also referenced Swift’s 2008 hit “Love Story,” saying that the song makes people want to text everyone they know and tell them how much they love them.

Mendes went on to say that Swift is the type of person who can make anyone older feel young again, as if they can do anything. “It’s so rare and so special,” he said. “If there is one thing I want to achieve in my career and life, it’s that,” he added.

Mendes and Swift’s friendship is not a secret to many. When Swift celebrated her 29th birthday last December, Mendes honored the occasion with a sweet throwback video of himself going full stan over Taylor.

After Mendes joined Swift in her “1989” and “Reputation” tours, the budding male singer revealed in an interview how Swift helped him overcome his stage fright when he was still new in the industry. He also crashed Swift’s Rose Bowl Party in 2018 with a surprise performance that made the crowd go wild.

The two musicians also love being silly together. Last year, Swift gave Mendes a glittery makeover while she was on the road, and in 2016 Swift greeted Mendes on his birthday with a video of herself dancing to his song “Treat You Better.” Undeniably, Swift and Mendes are total friendship goals, no matter how full their plates may be.
