An Israeli newspaper bizarrely compared the Freedom Flotilla activists' attempt to break the siege on Gaza to the 8th century "Viking takeover of Western Europe."
Greta Thunberg was one of 12 volunteers, including French European Parliament Member Rima Hassan, traveling on the Madleen, a sailing ship carrying aid, including medicine and food, for starving Palestinians in Gaza. The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) stopped the boat from reaching Gaza on Sunday and detained all 12 activists early Monday morning.
Following global uproar at the activists' detention on international waters, a war crime under international law, The Jerusalem Post, Israel's most-read English newspaper, described Thunberg, a Swedish national, as "another Viking taking to the seas in the form of a Swedish climate activist" in an editorial.
Additionally, the newspaper claimed the Freedom Flotilla's mission resembled "the major beginning of the Viking takeover of Western Europe" in 793.
The Jerusalem Post further slandered Thunberg, alleging she was a "poster girl" for the "anti-establishment camp." It also alleged she was a "symbol of selective empathy" who was "willfully blind" because she "stands, knowingly or not" with Hamas, which the newspaper deemed a "terror regime."
The newspaper's tone mirrors that of Israeli officials. The Israel Foreign Ministry referred to the Madleen as the "selfie yacht" in an update shared from its official X account hours before the ship's seizure.
