Japan, the actual Women’s World champions, will face England Wednesday’s second semifinal match at Edmonton, Canada at 5:00 p.m. ET. The question is if England can get to their first Women’s World Cup final? Or will Japan dash their hopes? The Lionesses made a dream start with Jodie Taylor and Lucy Bronze scoring goals in the opening 15 minutes against Canada on Saturday. That proved to be enough for England who will next face Japan, actual champions, in the semifinals.

Japan loves to possess the ball all the time, tringles, and dominate it. They are fast and more technically players. England should be patient and try to protect ball all the time. They have a good team but should have determination and confidence that they can defeat Japan’s bi-champion dream. However Japan is a complete team offensively and defensibly that will be hard to break it down. For Japan to grab the all-important victory against England, it needs to control the possession game once again.

Japan quest for back to back World Cup tittles is still very much alive after pulling off a heart stopping 1-0 victory against Australia on Saturday. Mana Iwabuchi scored the winning goal for the defending champions who preserved their 100% record in this tournament. The 22 years old got the breakthrough after 87 minutes, stroking in from close range after Azusa Iwashimizu’s shot was blocked.

A lot World Cup analysts are predicting Japan as the team to beat right now. With their defense getting stronger and stronger as the tournament progresses, it is expected that this match with England will be another defensive-minded contest. If England allows Japan to control the ball, then they may head home after Wednesday. Predicted result is a Japan victory 1-0 over England.

Midfielder Homare Sawa has already made history by appearing in her sixth World Cup. Now 36, the player joined the national team when she was just 15 years old.
