La Ley is back. After 10 years of working on their own, Beto Cuevas, Mauricio Clavería and Pedro Frugone got together one more time to bring their awesome music to their fans. Not only did they perform in Latin America, but they also brought their “Retour” to the United States with numerous performances covering 17 cities throughout the country with confirmed shows, starting in Fresno and ending in Miami, on November 21. The Chilean group has been focusing on meeting again with their fans in this country, performing their greatest hits as well as other great and unforgettable songs that make up their repertoire, many of which have become anthems for more than one generation.
La Ley is undoubtedly one of Latin America's most solid and significant pillars, having influenced tens of other groups with their style, songwriting and performance, and thereby becoming icons of the so-called "rock en español" movement of the 90s. With 7 studio-recorded albums, a live record (MTV Unplugged) and over ten greatest hits albums, La Ley has left its mark in the history of Latin rock. They are the only Chilean group to have won 3 Grammys so far, besides other multiple awards and international distinctions.
The “Retour” tour encompasses all those musical memories that are awaiting unforgettable moments and a new chapter in the group's career that began less than a year ago with their official comeback at the International Viña del Mar Festival. That was a defining moment that happened naturally for the group in order to continue with their musical legacy. So now that they got together, will they be releasing a new album? Or is it only this tour and then each one will take their own path? We spoke with Beto, who shed some light in the current situation of the band. And Spoiler Alert! You’re all gonna like it!

Latin Times: Beto, how do you feel going back to La Ley after all these years of being a solo artist and start touring again with the whole band?
Beto Cuevas: I feel great, super happy because we got together again and we’re really enjoying it. We’re enjoying our musicality and our musical history, but we’re also enjoying that we’re playing better than ever now. Way better than before, and that’s always pleasant. It gives you confidence in a group work in which each one of us depends on the other. Everything’s been working out and it has been pleasant for both the audience and ourselves.
LT: So it wasn’t so difficult to get back together with new, maybe different ideas after all these years of being apart…
BC: Everything flowed. Before we announced that we would be getting together to go touring, we decided to rehearse to see if we still had that “X factor” that allows us to be a group, and after a few rehearsals we realized that we, in fact, had it, and it was a great feeling because, like you said, I had been working as a solo artist and I’ve performed with many great musicians, but the sound of a band is different to the sound of a solo artist, and I think only time gives you that, and it’s something that we’ve cultivated and now reviving with this tour.
LT: What do you think is the key to the success of La Ley? You’re a Latin American rock band that has transcended time and continues to be current.
BC: Well, if I knew exactly what the key is, I would always use it. But I guess that one of the reasons why we’ve had good response from the audience and a fair amount of success is because we are ourselves. Yes, we’re artists who are influenced by different trends, but I think we put everything together and come up with a unique way of making music. We’ve developed our own sound and a personality in the way we compose our songs. This defines us and allows us to exist without being in the shadow of another artist that we admire or are influenced by. I think that it’s a matter of taking that influence and making it yours. I think La Ley is a Latin rock band that sounds like La Ley, and not necessarily like any other.
LT: After this “Retour,” what’s next? Any plans of getting together in the recording studio?
BC: Yes. We started composing new songs, taking advantage the new breezes of camaraderie and creativity between us. We started writing new songs that we would like to see on a new album maybe for next year. Perhaps March or April. So yes, we not only want to go on tour, but we would also love to give our musical present some sort of relevance and we can only do that through a new album.
LT: What can your fans expect from “Retour”?
BC: Well, anyone who comes to see us always leave happy. Each show is performed as it was our last show ever. That’s our philosophy because we know that someday we will do the last show of our lives. Hopefully that will be in a long time, but we always do it with that conviction and when you see an artist who’s giving his all on stage, people feel the energy and spread it around and end up having a great time. They leave with a smile, they leave with their hearts full, they leave with ideas, hopefully they leave inspired to do whatever they would like to do, and that’s what we want to do and that’s why we invite people to our concerts: to have fun and enjoy.
LT: Do you have a specific ritual before a show? Or does each one of you go to their dressing rooms and get together to start the concert?
BC: Well, first of all we have one dressing room for all of us, because we’re a band. We don’t believe in each one having their “own space” because we’re doing a group job. So we try to be together. The only “ritual” we have, if we can say it’s a ritual, it’s that we laugh, have a great time and try to be in good spirits before going on stage. We don’t like to argue or to talk about anything that could possibly bring us down. So we try to be careful in that way. We try to stay only us, but there’s always a friend or anyone who wants to say hi that comes in. Sometimes we even have meet and greets, but always trying to have a good attitude, because that’s what you bring on stage and what you end up giving your audience.
