Marjorie Taylor Greene Claims Americans Have Been 'Programmed' by Hollywood

Marjorie Taylor Greene sharply criticized President Donald Trump over continued federal funding for Planned Parenthood, calling it a "complete and total betrayal" of the anti-abortion movement in a post published Wednesday.

Greene argued, through a post on X, that even if existing law restricts direct federal funding for abortions, the financial support still enables the organization's broader operations. "Yes the Hyde Amendment prevents federal funds from funding abortions but all money is fungible," she wrote, adding: "Basically, you fund an abortion clinic, you fund abortions." She concluded that "the Trump administration is funding abortions," and accused officials of being "accountable" for what she described as a policy reversal.

Her remarks mark a continuation of Greene's long-standing opposition to abortion rights and align with positions she has publicly defended for years. Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, Greene described the decision as a "great victory for God and the unborn." In other public exchanges, she has rejected the framing of abortion as a matter of personal autonomy, stating that "killing an unborn baby is not a woman's right."

Greene has also supported restrictive abortion measures at the state level, including legislation that bans most abortions once fetal cardiac activity is detected, often around six weeks. Such policies have been widely debated due to their implications for access to care and medical decision-making in emergency situations.

At the same time, Greene has attempted to position herself more recently as an advocate for women within the Republican Party, stating in a January episode of The View that the GOP has "a woman problem."

That shift has drawn scrutiny from critics who point to her consistent backing of policies that limit abortion access. Writing in The Nation, Naomi Beinart argued that Greene's framing of women's issues has not extended to supporting "bodily autonomy," describing a disconnect between her rhetoric and legislative positions.

Greene's criticism of Trump also revives tensions within Republican circles over the party's approach to abortion policy and federal funding. During Trump's previous administration, Planned Parenthood continued to receive federal funds through programs not directly tied to abortion services, a practice Greene referenced in her post, stating that "Republicans and Trump funded Planned Parenthood $500,000,000 last time he was president."
