Michael Schumacher has been placed in an induced coma ever since his skiing accident that resulted to a devastating ski accident in December 29. A little more than a week later, French investigators shed light on the incident after studying a 2-minute video footage taken from Schumacher's helmet camera.

According to a video of the investigation's press conference, authorities that have studied the footage determined that Schumacher, despite apparent attempts to slow down, was travelling a little too quickly as he skied "off piste," or off the marked trail. Investigators claimed that Michael Schumacher tried to slow down when one of his skis struck a rock, causing him to lose his balance and fall. Experts also noted that Michael Schumacher had landed 9 meters, or 30 feet, outside the marked trail. Schumacher had fallen face first.

The precise speed that Michael Schumacher was traveling could not be determined by the footage. That said, investigators have ruled out speed as a factor.

"His pace was completely normal for a skilled skier," said Lt. Col. Benoit Vinneman of the regional police investigation unit. The French investigators have also ruled out Schumacher's ski equipment, trail conditions, or signage. Schumacher's pair of skis are relatively new, so equipment failure is highly unlikely.

Finally, trail conditions and signage at the Meribel ski resort are in accordance to regulations. In fact, skiers and snowboarders at Meribel continue to use the zone where Schumacher crashed.

"It was an accident that could have happened to anyone," said British tourist Steve Bovill. Bovill always wears a helmet and acknowledges the need to be extra careful given the incident.

Prosecutor Patrick Quincy said that Schumacher's investigation is standard after any major skiing accident. The investigation has no deadline and was intended to determined the cause of the crash, but not necessarily to hold anyone responsible. Without specifying, he said authorities plan to interview more witnesses.
