An Indian man allegedly shot dead his 17-year-old daughter in order to save the family's honor. The incident happened in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district on Monday when the girl was trying to run away with her boyfriend.

The man, a farmer, caught her leaving early morning. He tried to stop her. But when she refused to stay back, he lost his cool and grabbed his country-made pistol and shot her. The man was about to leave after the incident, but his wife informed the police and got him arrested. Police also recovered the weapon from his possession.

Police said the incident, which occurred at Paroli village, is a suspected case of honor killing, reported NDTV.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sankalp Sharma, the girl was in love with a youngster of the same village. She was a school dropout, and was reportedly in a relationship with the 21-year-old man for two years. The couple was from the same community and reportedly wanted to get married, but when the girl told her father about her wedding plans, he turned it down. The father chose to use force to make her stay inside the house.

On the other hand, the girl's mother had given green signal to the young couple's relationship, but she couldn't convince her husband. The girl was forced to stay inside the house for more than a month. Then on Monday, she decided to elope with her boyfriend.

Bilsi circle officer, Anirudha Singh, told The Times Of India that the father killed the girl to save his family's honor. He added that the man was sent to prison after a complaint filed by his wife, who was a witness to the crime. Statement of their neighbors have also been recorded, he said.

Police said that the man has confessed to the crime. He was booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 302 (murder). He is also in trouble for carrying a country-made pistol.

The victim's body has been sent for autopsy.

In a separate incident that happened last month, a 24-year-old man was shot dead and his wife was left injured in Dwarka, Delhi. Investigators suspect it is an incident of honor killing. In connection with the case, Delhi Police arrested two men, including the woman’s 26-year-old cousin, Rohit Dahiya, reported Indian Express.
