Mother, 2-Year-Old Son Falls To Death At Baseball Stadium Minutes Before Game

A mother and her 2-year-old son fell to their deaths from the concourse level of Petco Park, the home of the San Diego Padres baseball team, minutes before a game Saturday, Sept.25.

Shortly before 4 p.m., police officers at the stadium were alerted that a mother and child had fallen from the concourse level (the equivalent of six stories high) to the sidewalk, according to a news release from the San Diego Police Department.

Responding officers located the 40-year-old mother and her toddler son lying unresponsive on the sidewalk on Tony Gwynn Drive.

Officers performed life-saving measures on the victims, however, despite the efforts, the mother and son were pronounced dead at the scene.

"Our hearts obviously go out to the family, but also to the people who here could potentially be traumatized who saw this," homicide Lt. Andra Brown told the Union-Tribune.

Police Lt. Adam T. Sharki told the outlet that the mother and child had been at a dining/concession area on the concourse level before the fall.

The boy’s father was at the ballpark when the tragic incident happened, police reported.

The authorities did not immediately release the names of the victims, but police said they were San Diego residents.

Investigators from the San Diego Police Homicide Unit were called to the scene "out of an abundance of caution" after police said the deaths "appeared to be suspicious" adding that it was too early to confirm if the fall was an accident.

A further probe is underway and the investigators are looking for evidence and questioning possible witnesses, to gather more information about what actually happened.

"It’s a horrible, horrible thing. That’s why we’re giving it a very serious look." Brown said.

A witness told her husband that it appeared a toddler fell from an area with picnic tables, and the mother also fell while trying to grab the child, a man who did not wish to be identified told the outlet.

The San Diego Padres offered their prayers to the victims’ family.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of life at Petco Park last evening," the team said in a written statement Sunday morning.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of those involved. We will continue to refrain from comment on the nature of the incident as it is an ongoing investigation by the San Diego Police Department."
