Someday we as a society need to take a good look in the mirror and ask ourselves why we are so head-over-heels in love with drug dealers. From Tony Montana to Pablo Escobar, we need to uncover what's behind this fascination around their rise to power, their excesses, their inevitable demise. But that day is not today. Today, we'll just lay back and take a deep dive into our next collective obsession: "Griselda."

"Griselda" is the newest creation from the same team that brought us the hit Netflix series "Narcos". It stars Sofía Vergara as Griselda Blanco, a larger than life character who was feared by Pablo Escobar himself back in the day — Escobar was once quoted as saying that "the only man he ever feared was a woman and her name is Griselda Blanco".

So it's really no wonder that the limited series is garnering major buzz at the moment. Let's take a look at three reasons behind the"Griselda" phenomenon.

1. That Narcos DNA

As mentioned before,"Griselda" is helmed by the same team behind "Narcos," so chances are you're bound to get more of the same this time around. In case you forgot, Narcos is one of the most popular Netflix shows ever. It lasted three seasons that told the story of Pablo Escobar (seasons 1 and 2) and the Cali cartel (season 3) before shifting to Mexico for a spinoff that also ran for three more seasons. The show was a hit among both critics and audiences

2. The incredible real life story of Griselda Blanco

Also known as La Viuda Negra and La Madrina de la Cocaína, Griselda Blanco was a larger than life figure. Her life is packed with all sorts of curious tidbits that range from the disturbing to the absurd. For example, she was so in love with mobster culture that she named one of her sons Michael Corleone Blanco after Al Pacino's character in The Godfather trilogy. She also considered kidnapping John Kennedy Jr once. Her death could have been written by Hollywood scriptwriters. All in all, Griselda's was one of those lives that's just begging to be adapted to the small screen.

3. Sofía Vergara rises to the occasion

For years, Vergara has been trying to shed her role as Gloria on Modern Family. And this time around, she went to the dark side to prove she has what it takes. Vergara is electric, bringing complexity to the role and refusing to make Griselda a one dimensional character. Vergara believed so much in the show that she even serves as coproducer.
