NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani Ratios Andrew Cuomo With Comment

On the heels of defeat in the Democratic primary for Mayor of New York City, Andrew Cuomo posted a new campaign video underscoring his intention to stay in the race — but the post has proven to be yet another way for Cuomo to lose to Democratic nominee Zohran Kwame Mamdani.

Cuomo's video, titled "In it to win it," shows him walking New York City streets, posing for selfies and greeting passersby in what appeared to be a carefully produced attempt to mimic Mamdani's viral, low-budget style. "My opponent Zohran Mamdani offers slick slogans, but no real solutions," Cuomo tells the camera.

The video has garnered a modest 5,100 likes and 4,100 retweets as of Tuesday.

But Mamdani's response — simply a contribution link to his own campaign — lit up the platform, racking up over 165,000 likes and 10,000 retweets as of publication. The move effectively "ratioed" Cuomo's post, drawing exponentially more engagement than the original video itself.

The contrast underlined the young democratic socialist's remarkable online popularity. Cuomo himself acknowledged his opponent's strength in a recent interview with the New Yorker, where he admitted underestimating Mamdani's digital strategy and social media prowess during the primary.

Mamdani shared a screenshot of the feat on Instagram. "I'm so excited to welcome to the team our newest fundraiser, Westchester's own @andrewcuomo," the caption read.

Cuomo served as Governor of New York from 2011 to August 2021, when he stepped down amid sexual harassment allegations. Now he's running for mayor as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani by 12 points, and has vowed to take a more aggressive approach in the general election.

"I never really debunked his proposals because I just didn't engage. That was a mistake," Cuomo said.

But on social media, at least, Mamdani's influence remains formidable, with Monday's ratio serving as a reminder of the uphill battle facing Cuomo as he attempts to connect with the city's most energized and online voters.
