Argentine authorities have revealed that the extended family of Pope Francis have passed away after a car crash in the South American country. According to the Argentine police spokeswoman Carina Ferreyra, Emanuel Horacio Bergoglio, the Pope's nephew, was driving the vehicle in Cordoba when it hit a truck on a highway.

CNN reports that two of the pontiff's grandnephews (Jose Bergoglio, 8 months, and Antonio Bergoglio, 2) and the mother of the young boys (Valeria Carmona, 36) were killed Tuesday morning in a car crash. The boys' father suffered serious injuries and remains in critical condition.

The truck driver, 60-year old Raúl Pombo, suffered no injuries in the accident. Pombo told local media outlets that he was rear-ended and noticed Bergoglio's black vehicle on fire when he was on the curb of the road. “I felt the impact, looked in the mirror and when I was thrown on the shoulder the car was under the truck,” said Pombo to La Nación. “I don’t know what happened.”

The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis has heard the tragic news about his family. Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi has stated, reports Fox News Latino, that the Pope “was informed about the tragic accident" and "he is deeply pained." Lombardi also disclosed that the Pope has asked "all who share in his grief to unite with him in prayer."
