Porsche LMP1 2014 Le Mans
Porsche reveals its racing engine development for its LMP1 racing car ahead of the 2014 World Endurance Championship season and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Porsche

Given the dominance of Audi at Le Mans for the past decade, it is understandable for some fans to believe that the R8 through R18 has achieved unmatched success. However, that is not true. Porsche remains the winningest manufacturer at the French 24-hour circuit. For 2014, Porsche finally returns to endurance racing and the team is wasting no time. With the help of the most talented team of engineers as well as drivers including Formula 1 Red Bull's Mark Webber, Porsche will aim for the outright victory on its debut year.

The Porsche LMP1 will finally be ready for competition at the World Endurance Championship next year. In the meantime, the Stuttgart company has shared a new video discussing the development of the racing engine as the LMP1 car undergoes testing until its ready. While little details on the all-new Porsche racing engine are revealed (in fact, the video has blurred the engine to conceal its design), we do believe it will also be a diesel-hybrid powerplant that will distribute power to all four wheels. What's more, a brief flash at 47 seconds reveals an engine cover indicating a TDFI moniker, suggesting a turbodiesel engine.

If a turbodiesel hybrid powerplant sounds more like an engine designed for a pedestrian city car than a hotblooded racing car, that's the point. Every second spent refueling is every second lost on the race track. Having already won the 24 Hours of Le Mans 16 times, Porsche is not messing around.
