A 21-year-old pregnant woman, who was reportedly depressed about being deemed unlucky by her husband's family, allegedly ended her life on Wednesday, June 29, reports said

The deceased, identified as Pratima Kumari, a resident of Jhilmil village in India’s Bihar, got married to Ramesh Chaudhary on March 20 and was three months pregnant.

Her in-laws had deemed her unlucky after her husband’s younger brother died in a car accident on her wedding day. The vehicle carrying her husband’s family members had plunged into a river, killing her brother-in-law and a young man from the village.

Kumari’s in-laws blamed her for the death of her husband's younger brother and constantly taunted her for the same, Tikari SHO Shriram Choudhary said, Dainik Bhaskar reported.

They used to say that her feet are not auspicious, the officer added.

After bearing the taunts for a few months, the victim could bear them no more and decided to put an end to the harassment by hanging herself to death.

The victim’s parents claimed that their daughter had told them that her in-laws had threatened to murder her over pending dowry money.

The victim’s body was sent to a medical examiner’s office, where an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The family of the deceased's husband is reported to be absconding from the village.

No arrests have been reported. A further probe is underway.

This is an ongoing investigation and no further details were revealed at the time of this writing.

In a similar incident, a 38-year-old mother of five, who was depressed due to her divorce, allegedly killed herself at her parents’ house in the north Indian state of Punjab, authorities said.

The mother, who has not been publicly identified, was found hanging dead from the ceiling fan at her parents’ home in the Mithewal village of Ludhiana district on Sunday, June 26.

According to the police, the woman had been fighting depression following her divorce two years ago.

She and her five children, including four daughters and a 3-year-old son, had been living at her parents’ house since the divorce, reports said.

The victim’s eldest daughter, 20, was at work when the incident took place. Her three daughters, 14, 10, 8, and her toddler son were at home when she went to the bedroom and locked herself inside.

When their mother did not answer the door, despite repeated knocking, the 14-year-old began shouting for help and attempted to break open the door, but failed.

When no one came to help, the teen sent her 8-year-old sister into the room through a window. It was the child who found their mother hanging from the ceiling fan, according to reports.

No suicide note was recovered from the scene.
