Prince Charles may have just dropped the subtlest hint that he’s preparing to take over the British monarchy from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. For the first time ever, he accompanied Her Majesty to the State Opening of Parliament.

The heir to the throne sat beside the monarch throughout the entire event. He also assisted his mother on her way to and from the stage. Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, was also present at the event.

Camilla and the Queen both wore a tiara to the formal occasion. Prince Charles also wore his official uniform. According to Express, the royal couple’s attendance at the State Opening of Parliament is an obvious indication that they will soon take over the Queen.

Her Majesty is already 93 years old. And even though she has no plans to abdicate, she is slowly passing on some of her duties to her eldest child and grandson, Prince William.

The publication also said that Prince Charles’ presence at the event wasn’t just his way of showing his support to his mother. Rather, it was also a way for the British public to get used to seeing him at major events.

Meanwhile, even though Prince Charles is gearing up for his future role as king, it seems that the British public doesn’t want him to take over the throne. Last summer, Express asked their readers who they think would make the best king, and the majority of them answered Prince William.

More than 60 percent of the respondents or 4,000 votes favored the Duke of Cambridge over the Duke of Cornwall, who only received 18 percent of the votes. Respondents also said that they think that Kate Middleton will make a better queen consort than Camilla.

But it’s important to note that the decision on who will succeed the Queen is not up to royal fans or even Her Majesty herself. The 93-year-old royal doesn’t have the right to choose her successor. By law, Prince Charles will succeed the Queen because he’s the eldest male child of the reigning monarch.
