There have been talks, recently, that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle might opt to leave the UK and live abroad. Reports are saying that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex might be settling down in South Africa. However, a royal family expert believes that doing so is easier said than done.

Living outside the UK is possible but it would also mean a major compromise on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s part. Royal family expert Victoria Arbiter said that the royal couple could only leave the UK if they are willing to “renounce royal privileges” in the process, according to The Sun.

“That’s just not going to be OK unless, of course, they renounce all of their royal privileges, their royal titles, everything to do with their life as a member of the royal family,” Arbiter said on the New Zealand talk show “Breakfast.”

The tradeoff might be a bit too much even for the privacy-loving couple that they’re not likely going through with it. “I don’t see that happening, either,” the royal correspondent added.

“Some of them are a little bit more obvious. So they move to South Africa, so who pays for their security there?” Arbiter highlighted one of the major concerns should Prince Harry and Meghan Markle move to South Africa.

Security is a big issue for high-profile personalities such as members of the royal family. In fact, there were fans who believe Princess Diana’s death only happened because she was stripped of royal protection when she lost her HRH title.

Should Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decide to leave the royal family, they would no longer be funding from the Queen’s coffers. While they are both wealthy, paying for their own security arrangement would certainly put an unnecessary strain on their finances especially since they could have free protection if they stayed within the family.

Meghan Markle’s net worth is estimated to be around £3.8 million, which she earned as an actress in Hollywood, according to ES Insider. Meanwhile, Prince Harry’s fortune is around £30 million which comes from Diana and the Queen Mother.

While they may be able to afford security on their own, the Sussexes have not indicated that they plan to relocate to Africa anytime soon. Prince Harry expressed his love for the continent but admitted living there might be problematic.

“I don’t know where we could live in Africa at the moment,” Harry said in the "Harry & Meghan: An African Journey" documentary. “But with all the problems that are going on there [Cape Town], I just don’t see how we’d be able to really make as much difference as we’d want to without the issues and the judgment of how we would be with those surroundings.”
