A royal expert has claimed that Prince William and Kate Middleton don’t have a right to the British throne despite William being the second in the line of succession. Royal expert Katie Nicholl explained that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge need to justify their future roles and emulate Queen Elizabeth, who has never taken her position for granted.

Nicholl pointed out that while Prince William is destined to be king after his father, Prince Charles, he doesn’t have a “God-given right” to the British throne. Because of that, she warned him and his wife, Kate, to “justify being there.”

In the documentary “Kate: The Making Of A Modern Queen,” Nicholl said that unlike Queen Elizabeth, who is a queen because of her God-given right, Prince William and Kate will become king and queen without this same right. “I think the royal family is in a very unique position in that you know the Queen is on the throne because it was her God-given right,” she said.

Nicholl went on to explain that unlike when Queen Elizabeth became the monarch, today the concept that one is on the throne because of his or her God-given right is already an antiquated concept. “I think certainly if we’re looking into the future towards King William and Queen Catherine, it’s not going to be seen as a God-given right,” she explained.

According to Nicholl, Prince William and Kate need to justify their becoming king and queen when the time comes because by that time, people will no longer see their reign as a God-given right. “They are going to need to be a King and Queen of the people,” she said.

She explained that they need to be like Queen Elizabeth, who has succeeded in earning the respect of her people. “One has to respect the Queen hugely for that because I don’t think she takes her position for granted at all,” she said. “The image that is being cultivated of William and Kate now is going to be very important several years down the line because all of this will reflect our opinion of them.”
