Everybody looks up to the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton. From being young university lovers to being the mother and father of three, this couple has been through a lot together and is the ultimate “marriage goals.” What most people do not know, however, is that their wedding almost did not happen because of a sacrifice that Kate was not willing to make if she becomes a royal.

Kate came from a tight-knit family. She grew up being very close to her parents Carole and Michael, as well as to her siblings, Pippa and James. Although she and Prince William had been together for a decade before Prince William proposed to her, Kate had qualms about marrying her long-time boyfriend because of one thing: she knew that when she marries into the royal family, she would become a Windsor, and that’s it. Her family would have to take the back burner as she fulfills her duties as a royal wife.

As someone who grew up being so attached to her family, it was difficult for Kate to say “yes” to Prince William at first. While she committed to learning and doing her role as William’s future wife, one sacrifice that she was not willing to make was to give up being with her parents and siblings. Luckily, Prince William understood where Kate was coming from and made her this sweet promise before marrying her: that her family would always be involved in their lives, even when she becomes a royal.

When William asked Kate to marry him, he made it clear to her that she would not have to leave her family once she marries him. He promised her that they would always be treated like family, just as they had treated him for all the years that they had dated.

Prince William has been close to Kate’s family since they started dating. Even before Kate became a royal, Prince William had already attended family dinners with the Middletons and joined them on skiing vacations. Now that he and Kate have been married for eight years, he continues to keep his sweet promise to his wife by making sure the Middletons are present in royal events and family vacations. Kate surely is lucky she married a man who keeps his word.
