Meghan Markle recently received flak for altering her engagement ring, which featured two diamonds from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection. But it has now been revealed that she’s not the only royal who has changed up the late royal’s jewelry.

Years ago, Kate Middleton removed the diamonds from a pair of Princess Diana’s sapphire earrings. The earrings were Princess Diana’s favorite since they matched her engagement ring.

While she was still alive, the Princess of Wales was photographed with the dangling earrings that featured a stud fastening with its own circular sapphire diamond detail. But when Kate inherited it, the royal removed the stud fastening and diamonds and turned the jewelry into teardrop earrings.

Prior to her death, Princess Diana stated in her will how she wants her jewelry to be divided between her two sons. “I would like to allocate all my jewelry to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it,” she said. “I leave the exact division of the jewelry to your discretion,” Princess Diana added.

In 2010, Prince William gave his wife, Kate, his late mother’s 12-carat sapphire engagement ring, which is adorned with 14 solitaire diamonds and set in 18-carat white gold. The jewelry is estimated to be worth over $380,000. Until today, the Duchess of Cambridge hasn’t altered the precious engagement ring.

Two years ago, Prince Harry gave Meghan an engagement ring that he designed himself. The jewelry featured three diamonds set on a gold band. The main diamond was sourced out from Botswana, while the two smaller diamonds came from Princess Diana’s jewelry collection.

But while at the Trooping the Colour this month, eagle-eyed royal watchers noticed that Meghan’s engagement ring has been changed. During her interview with The Sun, royal commentator Ingrid Seward criticized Meghan for tweaking the ring.

“I find it a bit odd Meghan would want to alter a ring that her husband had especially designed for her,” Seward said. “A royal engagement ring is a piece of history not a bit of jewelry to be updated when it looks old fashioned,” she added.
